Emil Otto Hoppé was a renowned photographer, celebrated for his portraits of notable figures and his pioneering work in documentary photography. After beginning his career in 1903, he gained fame for capturing cultural icons and eventually traveled worldwide to document diverse landscapes and people. In 1954, his vast archive was filed by subject, obscuring his legacy. Rediscovered in the 1990s, Hoppé’s work is now preserved and available through the E.O. Hoppé Estate Collection.
Pidgeon Ward worked on the website for E.O. Hoppé crafting a visual style that could represent the depth of his oeuvre which spanned across time and place. Pidgeon Ward developed a sophisticated custom typeface utilising flared serifs alluding to Hoppé’s British heritage. The website showcases Hoppé’s range of photography by theme and location inviting a curated experience of his work similar to how it would be viewed in an Art Gallery.
